Durham social media pros unite

Apr 23, 2011 - 04:30 AM REKA SZEKELY DURHAM -- With thousands of connections among them, social media pros in Durham Region are being invited to connect with each other through a new local group. Sue Sutcliffe, president of a Clarington-based Internet company called aWEBthatWORKS, created a group called Social Media Professionals Durham through the professional networking site LinkedIn. The group's website, smpd.ca, redirects to LinkedIn. "LinkedIn was my choice to start it because everyone keeps their own profile up to date and that's important because it's not a full-time job for me," she said. Ms. Sutcliffe said she was inspired to start the group after attending a symposium through The Art of Transition, a forum formed to help transition Durham into a creative economy. "It just became very apparent Durham Region is so rich with talent, there's just so many people who have creative talents," she said. The group will be open to anyone who lives or works in Durham and Ms. Sutcliffe said the goal is to leverage each other's talent. She's hoping members will be able to take on bigger jobs knowing that if they need particular talents, they can turn to someone else in the group. For example a person with writing expertise can get graphic design help if they need it through the group. "So when you've got a chance at a big job and you can do half of it, but not the other half, you have a chance to grab it and keep that job in Durham," said Ms. Sutcliffe. By working together, Ms. Sutcliffe said she believes that bright students who graduate from UOIT and Durham College will see job opportunities in Durham and not be forced to move to Toronto to work. She admits that not everyone in the group will want to work together in all cases and said she sees it as a combination of co-operation and competition. "Competitors, theoretically, can come together and sometimes co-operate because it's better for the whole," she said. So far the group has more than 60 members and among them is Sarah Taniwa, a graphic designer who runs Lucky Cat Designs. "I guess it was just to connect locally with other businesses and to sort of put my hand out to say to say I'm willing to collaborate with local businesses in communications projects," she said, explaining her reasons for joining. She says she's worked collaboratively in the past, with writers and illustrators, and is hoping to continue to do so through the new group. As the organization grows, Ms. Sutcliffe said she's hoping to see it move beyond LinkedIn. "One of the examples is I'm thinking of putting together a social media conference and collaborating with the people who have joined." Awesome Performance by Ontario Philharmonic last night!

Music sure does soothe the soul as does seeing so many dear and wonderful people.

Ontario Philharmonic who’s sold out “Let’s Tango” performance was absolutely magical and enchanting at The Regent Theatre last night — especially Leslie Newman on flute.

Thanks to Clarington Center for the Arts for the beautiful hand made wine charm – a nice keepsake for the event, and Chuck Buyers for the wine talk, and of course all the wineries for the yummy wine! What a wonderful evening!

Attendees urged to give generously to new “Art of Transition Culture Fund”…

by Durham Community Foundation. All financial gifts will be invested, and the returns granted to charitable arts and culture organizations — the first being The Ontario Philharmonic who will receive the first grant — 50% from the proceeds of the launch party. The other 50% of proceeds from the launch party go to the fund, and as the principal stays invested, it creates a lasting legacy for arts in Durham Region. My social media challenge?

I would challenge the 800 in attendance, and anyone else who cares about art and culture in Durham Region to share this with their friends using social media and urge them to give. Since the average person has 126 people on Facebook — we would challenge 100,800 people together, and if 4% of those people to donate $25 each and we’d reach the goal of $1,000,000 which would yield grants of $80,000 per year. Hmmm…

Durham Region is inviting local songwriters to be the voice of Durham Tourism.

It is hosting a song contest where participants will create a jingle about Durham, with the winner to get $500 and a chance to perform it in public.

Local business owners invited to learn about accessibility

As part of the Durham Region Accessibility Expo, The Regional Municipality of Durham, Economic Development and Tourism Department, will be hosting a breakfast session to educate local business owners on accessibility compliance requirements.

WHEN: Thursday, June 17 from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.

WHERE: Durham College/UOIT Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre, 2000 Simcoe St. N., Oshawa

WHY: The Business Breakfast event is open to business owners who want to learn more about the requirements contained in the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005. Art Of Transition @ Karma Night Club

Last night creative minds in Durham Region met and mingled at Karma Night Club, a new and spectacular nightclub on Simcoe Street South in Oshawa. Geordie Lishman displayed his sculptures using a laptop, which drove his awesome ‘fire/dancing goo’ display – which moved with the tunes. I hope someone got this on video! Many thanks to Karma Night Club and Cointreau for sponsoring this event.
