Twitter Works for Whitby Writer

Heather M. O’Connor, Whitby, Ontario writer writes…

Social Media is about knowing where who you want to talk to hangs out. For writers, this is Twitter. I’m not a texter — I don’t even have a cellphone. Nonetheless, I plunged into this 140-character world ready for action.

Equipped with the basics thanks to my Social Media Circles course, I proceeded last February to set up a profile and build a following. In just one month, I added over 800 writers, editors, agents and publishers to my network, gained 200 followers, and was added to 15 lists.

Fast forward to today. I’m now following 2000 industry members. I have almost 800 followers. I’m listed on 37 lists as an author and a writer. I have connected and networked meaningfully with lots of agents, authors and publishers, and found a treasure trove of writer-specific resources.

I even had a lighthearted, but extended, #sixwordnovel exchange with Penguin USA that I plan to leverage when pitching my novel. Here’s how it started:

@penguinusa: The Year Penguin Published My Book #sixwordnovels (this one’s dedicated to all our future writers!)

@heathermoconnor: @penguinusa #sixwordnovels Great novel. No agent. Publish me?

Twitter has also helped me set up a all-expenses-paid weekend in Stratford as a journalist. Is Twitter working for me? Oh, yeah!

(Leaving for Stratford Friday morning at 8:30.)

And make that 84 lists. *BLUSH*

Do you have a Twitter Success Story? Please share and let’s grow together!

Try this on Facebook: New Fan Pages view

Gotta like Facebook’s new fan page administrator view! Will definitely save me and my clients time and money!

Facebook Users Beware of Dislike Button!

If anyone posts a status to your wall saying anything about a dislike button, DO NOT CLICK IT! Doing so will will prompt the user to install a JavaScript, not a virus. This JavaScript can then post the same message to friends walls. It could also install rogue applications and lead you to bogus surveys in an attempt to gather personal information, entice you to sign up for expensive SMS services and download spyware.

There is no Dislike button on Facebook and any mention of one is certainly a scam and should be avoided.

Beware Facebook Spam!

Don’t click on…
How to See Who Viewed Your Profile’…

While a large part of Facebook is dominated by real people, there is a small pool of spammers out there tricking the larger part of Facebook. These spammers are spreading deceitful messages through apps and events. One of the newly popular app that comes from the elite spam group is the “How to See Who Viewed Your Profile” application.

If you’ve been stung or want to know more about this, read the entire post… Facebook Profile Viewing App/Event: ‘How to See Who Viewed Your Profile’.

Welcome to my facebook page

Ever visit Red Bull on Facebook? A multi-coloured torrent of arrows points to their “Like Me” button. Did this welcome page work? Yup – a good 15 million times.

It pays to create a good first impression with Facebook’s 500 million users. A clear and engaging welcome (or landing) page gives visitors an immediate sense of who you are, what you do and why they should become a fan. It also encourages visitors to “like” your organization’s page.
