<blockquote><p>Social Media is about knowing where who you want to talk to hangs out. For writers, this is Twitter. I&#8217;m not a texter &#8212; I don&#8217;t even have a cellphone. Nonetheless, I plunged into this 140-character world ready for action.</p>
<p>Equipped with the basics thanks to my Social Media Circles course, I proceeded last February to set up a profile and build a following. In just one month, I added over 800 writers, editors, agents and publishers to my network, gained 200 followers, and was added to 15 lists.</p>
<p>Fast forward to today. I&#8217;m now following 2000 industry members. I have almost 800 followers. I&#8217;m listed on 37 lists as an author and a writer. I have connected and networked meaningfully with lots of agents, authors and publishers, and found a treasure trove of writer-specific resources.</p>
<p>I even had a lighthearted, but extended, #sixwordnovel exchange with Penguin USA that I plan to leverage when pitching my novel. Here&#8217;s how it started:</p>

<p>Twitter has also helped me set up a all-expenses-paid weekend in Stratford as a journalist. Is Twitter working for me? Oh, yeah!</p>

<p>As a result, changes in our legal system don&#8217;t effect me personally, but could very well put journalistic sources at risk if they use social media to relay their information&#8230;</p>

The provision is fairly typical for technology startups to include in their policies as a way to protect themselves from getting involved in legal issues pertaining to the platform’s users. With such a policy, Twitter is not held responsible, and in many ways it should not be. According to the media lawyers we interviewed, this kind of government request is not unique.</p></blockquote>
