Rules of Networking

Just read an really interesting post by Recruiterpoet called “Networking Needs Compassion” and loved the way he summed up the Rules of Networking…

Some approaches can be successful but one must always remember a few key principles of networking.

1.) It takes time. Networking is like a fine red wine. It takes time to age but when you finally open it, the rewards are bountiful.

2.) Networking needs compassion, trust, and respect. We will get into this further on in this article, but the bottom line is don’t be a selfish networker. You know who you are. You only reach out to people when you need something. You play the sales role well by shaking hands, taking cards and buying a drink or two but never follow up unless you need something. Bad, bad, bad networker.

3.) Diversify your network. Now I sound like Jim Cramer. Use a variety of means of networking including face to face, social media and internal corporate channels. Do not limit yourself, but also do not over extend yourself.

4.) Continue to evolve and grow. As your professional, personal, volunteer, publications, events, and other aspects of your life add to your life summary, update that information and ensure that all the individuals in your network are aware of how well you are developing and diversifying.

5.) Be cautious of hitchhikers. There is nothing wrong with aligning yourself with open networkers but be careful of their message and what they are trying to gain. Aligning yourself with the wrong individuals could have an adverse affect on your reputation.

6.) Be generous but be aware. Be generous with how your share your time and connections but do not over use your power. Your closest networking counterparts put a tremendous amount of trust in you and if you use them too much that is an abuse of the trust and it could damage a relationship.

I wasn’t sure what celebrating “the animal human bond” meant exactly but…

…I wasn’t disappointed, and really enjoyed this one-hour multicultural performance @Bowmanville Zoo. Have you bought a ticket yet? If not, best buy your ticket now. Show only runs until Jan.2.

If you did see the show, what was your favourite performer or performance?

In my eyes, the LION was clearly King, but the TIGER looked so hungry and looked right through me, but the ELEPHANT is just too cute. Then there is the MONKEY that pulled the cord to change acts and the most WHITE HORSES prancing around to the dreamiest music. <g>. If we’re friends on Facebook, you’ll know which one I picked.

Will you take the $20 challenge?

Local entrepreneur donates to charity with every order

DURHAM REGION, ON – SEPT. 14, 2010: What can you do with $20? Sue Sutcliffe wants to find out. The Internet strategist and professional speaker was inspired by the $20 challenge made at last year’s Day of Hope and Leadership event: to take $20 and help someone in need.

Her company, aWEBthatWORKS.com, is doing just that. Customers who mention this year’s event when placing an order will receive a $20 donation to their charity of choice. And the philanthropic entrepreneur challenges other organizations to step up to the plate and join her.

The third annual Day of Hope and Leadership, an interactive professional development day, takes place Tuesday, October 5 at Tosca Banquet Hall in Oshawa. Organizers will repeat the $20 Challenge issued at last year’s event, says founder Dan Carter. He estimates that the $5000 handed out in last year’s $20 Challenge snowballed into a $50,000 impact in the community.

“Each participant is given an envelope. We say, ‘Inside this envelope is my e-mail address and a brand new twenty dollar bill. You have 24 hours to take that money and grow it and give it, or take it and give it to someone or some organization where you know that $20 can make a difference. Unconditionally.’”

The idea resonates with socialpreneur Sue Sutcliffe. She believes giving back should be an integral part of every business, especially when times are tough.

“When the economy’s tight, people tighten up their giving. Local charities are hurting. Food bank shelves are empty and people in our own neighbourhoods don’t have enough to eat.”

Hearing about Sutcliffe’s challenge gives Dan Carter goose bumps. He recalls having the same feeling when the emails started pouring in last year, telling how participants had invested their money in the lives of others. “We were in tears, saying, ‘Oh my God, you’ve got to read this one.’”

The solutions were varied, and so gratifying, he says. After all, there’s no shortage of people needing help.

“Every day we are introduced to someone who needs a hand up or an ear or a little bit of kindness or a little compassion. On the streets, in the coffee shops, in the shopping centres, in our churches and communities.”

It’s our chance to make a difference.

20 dollar challenge special

aWEBthatWORKS.com proudly presents Todd Skinner at this year’s Day of Hope and Leadership.

Todd Skinner grew up and lived in a modest neighbourhoor in Oshawa, Ontario; the average “Kid Next Door”- but, the passion he discovered for business and enterprise at a young age was anything but average. His innate driven sense for business and a passion for learning would grant him the oppourtunity to spend the next two decades of his life delving into a wide variety of business experiences at home and across the globe. It wasn’t until one night, he found himself far from home, on a business trip in India, where he came to the realization that the foundation of business success was rooted in helping people to lead extraordinary lives. Todd found that regardless of culture, position or resources, people living to their full potential made a difference by creating extraordinary businesses, communities and families. Thus, Todd started the journey of sharing his extensive experience, and knowledge to help organizations and leaders build companies and people that inspire, motivate and challenge one another to live big lives and make a difference.

Day of Hope and Leadership is an innovative, professional development day being hosted by Dan Carter Productions in Oshawa on October 5, 2010. For more information, please visit Day of Hope and Leadership.

$50,000 In Fines Is Not Brotherly Love!

It upset me to read the Toronto Star’s article “What price liberty? Up to $50″ about the Jaworski family in Orono who have a ‘neighbour’ who doesn’t understand the concept.  This neighbour recently took it on themselves to call to Municipality of Clarington to tattle about a conference the Jaworski’s were hosting for a registered charity called the Institute for Liberal Studies.

As a direct result:

1) the Jaworski family are now facing a total of $50,000 in fines for improper land use of  their 16 hectaires of agricultural land in Orono called Hillside Estate.

2)  Certainly the experience of the 72 conference attendees this year were marred?

3) The future of the 11th “Liberty Summer Seminar” is in question. Will it happen? Will the Jaworski’s be able to find a way to hold the 11th?

I understand there has to be rules, and that the Municipality’s must enforce them if there is a complaint, but I can’t wrap my head around how a person could hate on another ‘neighbour’ that much!  Hopefully our justice system will be more gracious and lenient — especially given this fragile economy!

What do YOU think about this?

Bill 65 will affect every nonprofit and charity in Ontario. Does it work for you?

Does your nonprofit organization care about:

  • Calling your organization a public benefit corporation so the public can easily know your intent is to provide for the public good?
  • Limiting the liability of your volunteer Directors?
  • Accessing Community Bonds with credible oversight to raise funds?
  • Ensuring that the threshold for annual audits is not reduced to $100,000?
  • Maintaining your organization’s choice on the use of proxies?

Find out more via Centre for Social Innovation‘s post on this topic and register now for ONN and the Canadian Economic Development Network (CCEDNet) teleconference session on Wednesday, August 18th at 10am.
