CARPE DIEM

Sue Sutcliffe Speaking
Sue Sutcliffe Speaking

Once upon a time there was a girl named Sue, who never raised her hand and managed to ‘sick’ her way out of speaking publically. In fact, she managed to get out of school without giving even one speech.

Susan was painfully shy and even thinking of speaking to multiple people filled her with dread to the point she could hardly draw a breath.

Then one day in 1995, in a community hall in Egypt Ontario two men changed Sue forever. Jamie Johnston, Sue’s biggest client, former boss, and mentor needed her to talk when his employee called in sick and left Sue no choice. The second, Roy St. John who walked her through dry-mouth and the terror that filled her body as the room filled up with 200 rural folks who came to learn about the Internet.

Speaking publically albeit terrifying, slowly got easier and made Susan stronger and more confident — two traits that were invaluable as the years passed. Sue’s new-found confidence allowed Susan to share the wisdom she gleaned from her addiction to the internet over the past 25 years and many lives and communities were changed as a result. She found ‘her thing’.

The moral of this story? Facing your fears may be scary but it’s far easier when you Seize the Day — that’s what Carpe Diem means — and trust in the heros that surround you.
