Business group recognizes businesswoman
durham region, ON June 12, 2008: The Durham Home and Small Business Association awarded one of its longest-standing and hardest-working members a life membership at its June 4th Annual General Meeting at Port Whitby Marina. Sue Sutcliffe of A Web That Works thanked the DHSBA for the honour in a videotaped acceptance speech.
“They say it takes a village to raise a child. I say, it takes a village to raise a business. I am proud to be a member of the DHSBA village.”
Sutcliffe has actively supported the small business networking group since it began. Over thirteen years, she has held virtually every board position and served on numerous committees.
“The DHSBA was my first business group – there’s no group like it. It’s an excellent starting point. The DHSBA just seems to attract friendly people.”
Sutcliffe has received every honour the association can bestow. Her website design and web marketing business won the association’s first Business of the Year Award in 1997. Six years later, a special award, named for founder Betty Penny was created to honour the dynamic entrepreneur’s superlative leadership, contribution and success in the business community. Life membership has been awarded only once before, to Penny herself.
“I’ve received far more from the DHSBA than I could ever put into it,” admits Sutcliffe. “You go out to the meetings and it’s friendly, it’s fun and you usually walk away with a bit of business and some knowledge of how to improve your business. Most of all, I’ve made a lot of lifelong friends.”
