The term “Metaverse” was coined in 1992 in science fiction novel Snow Crash as a portmanteau of “meta” and “universe” but is now all the buzz due to increased use of the terminology by tech companies using the term to refer to immersive experiences and a shift in how we interact with technology, rather than a specific technology, and often includes:
- augmented reality– combines aspects of the digital and physical worlds
- xr
- extended reality
- mixed reality
- virtual reality — persistent virtual worlds that continue to exist even when you’re not playing
- virtual worlds — such as aspects of Fortnite that can be accessed through PCs, game consoles, and even phones
